CALL TO WORSHIP (adapted from Psalm 105)
Pastor: Give thanks to the Lord and call on his name; make his deeds known to all people!
People: Lord, we sing to you and tell of your wonderful works! You make our hearts rejoice!
Pastor: Seek the Lord and seek his strength; let us continually seek his presence.
People: He is the Lord our God and his judgments are in all the earth
Pastor: Satisfy us in the morning with your unfailing love,
People: He is mindful of his covenant forever, for a thousand generations.
Pastor: The covenant that he made with Abraham, and swore through Isaac and Jacob, to bestow us our inheritance.
All: Bless the Lord and praise his holy name!
PRAYER OF PRESENCE
All: Most gracious God, we pray to you. We ask for your blessing in our worship this morning. Hear our prayers and let our praise be a delight to you. Send your Spirit upon us and fill us with love for you and each other. In the name of Jesus Christ, we pray. Amen.
* HYMN OF PRAISE “Christ Be My Leader” (verses 1 & 3)
(hummed – not sung)
Christ be my leader by night as by day,
Safe through the darkness, for he is the Way.
Gladly I follow, my future his care,
Darkness is daylight when Jesus is there.
Christ be my Savior in calm as in strife;
Death cannot hold me, for he is the Life.
Nor darkness, nor doubting, nor sin and its stain
Can touch my salvation: with Jesus I reign.
PASSING OF THE PEACE
(please stand, but remain in place, and greet your nearest neighbors with a wave and a blessing of peace)
PRAYER OF CONFESSION
All: Lord of grace and mercy, we pray to you. For the sins of our souls, our thoughts, and our actions, we beg your forgiveness. Strengthen us against the temptations of the world. We call on your name to make new and clean hearts within us. We pray this in the love of your Son, Jesus Christ, who forgives and redeems the world. Amen.
(Responsive Hymn #817 – to be hummed, not sung) - Hear our prayer O Lord. Hear our prayer O Lord. Incline thine ear to us, and grant us Thy peace. Amen.
WORDS OF ASSURANCE (John 16:22-23)
All: “So with you: Now is the time of your grief, but I will see you again and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy. In that day you will no longer ask me anything. Very truly I tell you, my Father will give you whatever you ask in my name.”
*Gloria Patri: Glory be to The Father Hymn #805 (hummed – not sung)
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost;
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
World without end, Amen, Amen.
SUMMARY OF THE LAW (Mark 12:28-31)
One of the teachers of the law came and heard them debating. Noticing that Jesus had given them a good answer, he asked him, “Of all the commandments, which is the most important?”
“The most important one,” answered Jesus, “is this: ‘Hear O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these.”
HYMN FOR ILLUMINATION (seated) “Spirit of the Living God” Verse 1 (hummed – not sung) Hymn #297
Spirit of the living God, fall afresh on me.
Spirit of the living God, fall afresh on me.
Break me, melt me, mold me, fill me;
Spirit of the living God, fall afresh on me.
PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION
SERMON HYMN “O Little Town of Bethlehem” (verses 1 & 4)
O little town of Bethlehem, how still we see thee lie!
Above thy deep and dreamless sleep the silent stars go by.
Yet in the dark streets shineth the everlasting light;
The hopes and fears of all the years are met in thee tonight.
O holy child of Bethlehem, descend to us, we pray;
Cast out our sin, and enter in; be born in us today.
We hear the Christmas angels the great glad tidings tell;
O come to us, abide with us, our Lord Emmanuel.
SCRIPTURE READINGS – Micah 5:1-15, 6:1-8
THE MORNING MESSAGE - “A Promised Ruler“
*OFFERTORY PRAYER AND DOXOLOGY
*APOSTLES CREED Hymnbook #14
JOYS & CONCERNS – MORNING PRAYER – THE LORD'S PRAYER
*CLOSING HYMN “What Does the Lord Require?” (verses 1, 4, & 5)
(hummed – not sung)
What does the Lord require for praise and offering?
What sacrifice, desire, or tribute bid you bring?
Do justly, love mercy, walk humbly with your God.
Still down the ages ring the prophet’s stern commands;
To merchant, worker, king, he brings God’s high demands:
Do justly, love mercy, walk humbly with your God.
How shall our life fulfill God’s law so hard and high?
Let Christ endue our will with grace to fortify.
Then justly, in mercy, we’ll humbly walk with God.
*CLOSING PRAYER & BENEDICTION
*CHORAL POSTLUDE: "Lord, Dismiss Us with your Blessing" Hymn #834
(hummed – not sung)
Lord, dismiss us with your blessing; fill our hearts with joy and peace;
Let us each, your love possessing, triumph in redeeming grace;
O direct us and protect us, traveling through this wilderness.
