CALL TO WORSHIP (Adapted from Psalm 130)
Leader: Out of the depths I cry to you, Lord;
People: Lord, let your ears be attentive to my cry for mercy.
Leader: Lord, if you kept a record of sins, then who of us could stand?
People: But with you there is forgiveness, so that we may revere and serve you.
Leader: Put your hope in the Lord,
All: For with the Lord is unfailing love and full redemption.
PRAYER OF PRESENCE
All: Holy Lord, hear our prayer. We know that by your grace dark nights give way to bright mornings. By your mercy we know that rainbows follow every storm. We lift up your holy name as the source of all hope and healing in the world. For your loving presence in our lives and in our world, we give you our greatest thanks and praise. In the name of our Lord, Jesus Christ, we pray. Amen.
HYMN OF PRAISE “Great Is the Lord Our God” (verses 1, 3, & 5)
Great is the Lord our God, and greatly to be praised;
Upon a hill God's city stands in glorious beauty raised;
His holy mountain high, the city of our King,
The joy of all the earth below, and God's great name we sing.
Within your temple, Lord, in your most holy place,
We on your loving kindness dwell, the wonders of your grace.
Your people sing your praise, where'er your name is known:
By every deed your hand has done your righteousness is shown.
Observe her palaces, mark her defenses well,
That to the children following you her glories you may tell.
For God as our own God forever will abide,
And till life's journey close in death will be our faithful guide.
PASSING OF THE PEACE
PRAYER FOR GRACE
All: Gracious God, we confess our faith in your this morning. We are imperfect reflections of your divine grace. We do not love you or our neighbors as fully as we should. By your own law we should be condemned. Yet you give us the promise of mercy. Only you can forgive us from the depths of our sin. We pray for your continued love and grace in our lives, through the name of our Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen.
(Responsive Hymn #817) - Hear our prayer O Lord. Hear our prayer O Lord. Incline thine ear to us, and grant us Thy peace. Amen.
WORDS OF ASSURANCE (John 16:33)
All: [Jesus said], “...In me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! For I have overcome the world.”
*Gloria Patri: Glory be to The Father
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost;
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
World without end, Amen, Amen.
CALL TO FAITHFUL LIVING (James 1:19-20)
“You must understand this, my beloved: Let everyone be quick to listen, slow to speak, slow to anger. For your anger does not produce God's righteousness.”
HYMN FOR ILLUMINATION (seated) “Spirit of the Living God” Verse 1
Spirit of the living God, fall afresh on me. Spirit of the living God, fall afresh on me.
Break me, melt me, mold me, fill me; Spirit of the living God, fall afresh on me.
PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION
SERMON HYMN “Safe in the Shadow of the Lord” (verses 1, 2, 3, & 6)
Safe in the shadow of the Lord, beneath his hand and power,
I trust in him, I trust in him, my fortress and my tower.
My hope is set on God alone though Satan spreads his snare;
I trust in him, I trust in him, to keep me in his care.
From fears and phantoms of the night, from foes about my way,
I trust in him, I trust in him, by darkness and by day.
Safe in the shadow of the Lord, possessed by love divine,
I trust in him, I trust in him, and meet his love with mine.
SCRIPTURE READINGS – Psalm 88:1-7
Matthew 5:21-30
THE MORNING MESSAGE – “Hard Words: Hell”
*OFFERTORY PRAYER AND DOXOLOGY
Praise God, from whom all blessings flow;
Praise Him, all creatures here below.
Praise Him above, ye heavenly host;
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.
*APOSTLES CREED
I believe in God the Father, almighty,
Maker of heaven and earth,
And in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord;
Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
Born of the Virgin Mary,
Suffered under Pontius Pilate,
Was crucified, dead, and buried.
The third day he rose from the dead
He ascended into heaven
And sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty,
From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, The holy catholic church,
The communion of saints, The forgiveness of sins,
The resurrection of the body,
And the life everlasting. Amen.
JOYS & CONCERNS – MORNING PRAYER – THE LORD'S PRAYER
(Lord’s Prayer – “…sins / …those who sin against us…”)
CLOSING HYMN “Amazing Grace”
Amazing grace! How sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me!
I once was lost, but now am found, was blind but now I see.
'Twas grace that taught my heart to fear, and grace my fears relieved;
How precious did that grace appear, the hour I first believed!
The Lord has promised good to me, his word my hope secures;
He will my shield and portion be as long as life endures.
Through many dangers, toils, and snares I have already come;
'Tis grace that brought me safe thus far, and grace will lead me home.
When we've been here ten thousand years, bright shining as the sun,
We've no less days to sing God's praise than when we'd first begun.
*CLOSING PRAYER & BENEDICTION
*CHORAL POSTLUDE: "Lord, Dismiss Us with your Blessing"
(hummed – not sung)
Lord, dismiss us with your blessing; fill our hearts with joy and peace;
Let us each, your love possessing, triumph in redeeming grace;
O direct us and protect us, traveling through this wilderness.
